Parashat Beha’alotcha 5782 / פָּרָשַׁת בְּהַעֲלֹתְךָ

Parashat Beha'alotcha is the 36th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading.
Torah Portion: Numbers 8:1-12:16
Beha’alotekha (“When You Raise”) opens with God instructing Moses to inaugurate the Levites for service in the Mishkan (Tabernacle). It also recounts the stories of people who request a second chance to offer the Passover sacrifice, complaints of the Israelites and their punishments, and a disease that affects Miriam. [1]

Consider the meaning of the word, “integrity”, to doing what’s right even when under pressure to do wrong or no one is watching you. It is having the courage and fortitude to always do what’s right no matter what the circumstances or the temptation. It’s continuing to have that strength of character even when the going gets so rough that it’s easy to dismiss those values.
Israel was in the middle of the desert. They had received the Ten Commandments, seen the might of Hashem, drank water, eaten both manna and quail supplied by Hashem. They had seen the protection of the two pillars of cloud to protect them.
And now, they start complaining. They are tired of just manna and want meat. They miss Egypt for the unending supply of free fish they had to eat. Likewise, Miriam and Aaron complain about Moses’ neglect of his wife.
Consider that faith is believing in something just because. Yet Israel didn’t need faith. They had seen the miracles with their own eyes.
We are, unfortunately, starting to see why our ancestors would be doomed to wander in the desert for thirty-nine years. It is starting to look like they lack the fortitude and integrity to continue to be loyal to Hashem even when times are tough. A lesson for the rest of us in times of trouble….

Beha'alotekha ("Cuando resucites") comienza con Dios instruyendo a Moisés para inaugurar a los levitas para el servicio en el Mishkan (Tabernáculo). También relata las historias de personas que piden una segunda oportunidad para ofrecer el sacrificio de la Pascua, las quejas de los israelitas y sus castigos, y una enfermedad que afecta a Miriam. [1]
Considere el significado de la palabra "integridad" para hacer lo correcto, incluso cuando está bajo presión para hacer lo incorrecto o nadie lo está mirando. Es tener el coraje y la fortaleza para hacer siempre lo correcto sin importar las circunstancias o la tentación. Sigue teniendo esa fuerza de carácter incluso cuando las cosas se ponen tan difíciles que es fácil descartar esos valores.
Israel estaba en medio del desierto. Habían recibido los Diez Mandamientos, visto el poder de Hashem, bebido agua, comido maná y codornices proporcionadas por Hashem. Habían visto la protección de las dos columnas de nube para protegerlos.
Y ahora, empiezan a quejarse. Están cansados del maná y quieren carne. Extrañan Egipto por el suministro interminable de pescado gratis que tenían para comer. Asimismo, Miriam y Aarón se quejan del descuido de Moisés por su esposa.
Considere que la fe es creer en algo porque sí. Sin embargo, Israel no necesitaba fe. Habían visto los milagros con sus propios ojos.
Desafortunadamente, estamos empezando a ver por qué nuestros antepasados estarían condenados a vagar por el desierto durante treinta y nueve años. Está empezando a parecer que les falta la fortaleza y la integridad para seguir siendo leales a Hashem incluso cuando los tiempos son difíciles. Una lección para el resto de nosotros en tiempos de problemas...
